Cards in Envy - Challege #4 Make Your Own Background

There's a new challenge at Cards in Envy.  This time we are challenged to create a card by making our own background.  I decided to create a starburst card following a tutorial from Operation Write Home.

Starburst card - A2 = 5.5" x  4.25"
DP from DCWV Mainstreet Stack

To create this card:
  • Cut a piece of cardstock 5.25" x 4" to attach the starburst rays onto.  This piece will not be viewable when done.
  • Cut several coordinating cardstock pieces at 4.5" x 1.5".  I choose three different cardstocks from DCWV Mainstreet Stack.
  • Cut each of the 4.5" x 1.5" pieces in half on the diagonal.  Ink the edges of each with Tim Holtz Tea Dye Distress Ink.
  • Tape each diagonal cut around the 5.25" x 4" cardstock cut.  Trim off edges to create a clean looking starburst.
  • Cut a 5.25" x 4" mat (green tweed).   Attach starburt to mat and attach to card base.
  • Punch a 1" circle (solid green).  Attach butterfly (from Martha Stewart punch).  Mount with foam tape where all starburst cuts come to a point.  White gel pen and Liquid Pearls used to create the antennae of butterfly.
Inside of Card

Inside of card:
  • Mat 1 (green tweed) = 5" x 3.75".  Paper from DCWV Mainstreet Stack.
  • Mat 2 (beige) = 4.75" x 3.5".
  • Butterflies = from Martha Stewart punch.

Star / Sun Burst Card

A2 sized card.  Original tutorial from Operation Write Home website: http://www.owhstarsandstamps.org/2011/06/tutorial-starburst.html

colors are from Cricut Imagine "Mystical Garden" cartridge.

Mat 1 (dark brown) = cut at 5.25" x 4"

Mats 2 - 6 (5 different patterns that will go together) = cut at 4. 5" x 1.5", then cut again diagonally.  Ink all edges with Tim Holtz Tea Dye distress ink after cutting diagonally.

Heart (pink-ist / yellow pattern)  = cut at 2" from Cricut Craft Room Basic Shapes.  Ink edges of heart with Tim Holtz Tea Dye distress ink.   I used a paper piercer on the edge of heart to give more interest.

Heart Shadow (darker color behind heart) = this shape has a scalloped edge around it - cut at 2.2" from Cricut Craft Room Basic Shapes.

Tape diagonally cut pieces around base (Mat 1).   Once done, I had two additional unused pieces.  Trim pieces that extend past the card base (Mat 1).  You can also trim away some of the points that will fall under the heart.  Ink edges of card base (Mat 1) with Tim Holtz Tea Dye distress ink.

I added yellow twine where diagonal pieces meet - this step is optional.  I used Terrifically Tacky glue to attach "Friendship Twine" (purchased in children's craft section at Walmart).  Just thought it gave more interest and motion to the card.

Tape / Glue Scallop Heart Shadow where points of diagonal pieces meet.  Add top heart with foam tape.

I also added two sets of three Viva Decor Pearl Pens to card.

Inside of card.

Sentiment "what on earth did I think about all the time before you?" = from Hero Arts "Epic Love" stamp set, designed for Operation Write Home.

Hearts = punched with Martha Stewart punch using the two left over diagonal pieces from card front.
