Ahoy! Whale Card

Cards in Envy Challenge!

It's the 3rd Monday of the month - time for a challenge from Cards in Envy.  Our challenge this time is to create a card using Polka Dots and/or Stripes.

Cards in Envy Polka Dots and/or Stripes Challenge.
A2 sized card = 5.5" x 4.25".
I created a card using the Buccaneer Imagine cartridge for my paper colors and the Create a Critter Cricut cartridge for my whale and message bubble images.

Here's how I made my card:
  • Mat 1 (big red polka dots) = 4" x 2.5".  Paper colors from Buccaneer Imagine Cricut cartridge.  Edges of mat inked using Tim Holtz Faded Blue Jeans Distress Ink.
  • Mat 2 (blue stripes) = 4" x 2.5".   Paper colors from Buccaneer Imagine Cricut cartridge.  Edges of mat inked using Tim Holtz Faded Blue Jeans Distress Ink.
  • Mat 3 (solid black) = 3" x 3".  Mat has been embossed using the Cricut Cuttlebug Swiss Dots folder.  Paper colors from Buccaneer Imagine Cricut cartridge.  Edges of mat inked using Tim Holtz Faded Blue Jeans Distress Ink.  Top and bottom of mat has foam tape to allow attachment over the ribbon underneath.
  • Mat 4 (solid red) = 2.5" x 2.5".   Mat has been embossed using the Cricut Cuttlebug Spots and Dots folder.  Paper colors from Buccaneer Imagine Cricut cartridge.  Edges of mat inked using Tim Holtz Faded Blue Jeans Distress Ink.
  • Whale image = cut at 2.5" from Cricut Create a Critter cartridge; <Whale>; page 41 of the folder.  Paper colors from Buccaneer Imagine Cricut cartridge.  Whale is mounted with very thin foam just to slightly lift from mat underneath.  The foam tape used is about the same thickness as cardstock.  Water spout on whale has Stickles "Diamond" applied.  White gel pen used to color in whale's eyes.  Paper colors from Buccaneer Imagine Cricut cartridge.  Edges of whale inked using Tim Holtz Faded Blue Jeans Distress Ink.
  • Message Bubble "Ahoy" image mat 1 (black) = cut at 1.3" from Create a Critter cartridge; <Cow><Phrase>, on page 60 of the folder.   Paper colors from Buccaneer Imagine Cricut cartridge. Edges of mat inked using Tim Holtz Faded Blue Jeans Distress Ink.
  • Message Bubble "Ahoy" image mat 2 (beige) = cut at 1.2" from Create a Critter cartridge; <Cow><Phrase>, on page 60 of the folder. Paper colors from Buccaneer Imagine Cricut cartridge. Edges of mat inked using Tim Holtz Faded Blue Jeans Distress Ink.  One side of the message bubble is mounted with foam tape, the other was taped directly to the mat.
    • To get the "Ahoy" on the message bubble:  I left the message bubble on my Cricut mat after is was printed and cut.   Using the Cricut Craft Room software (free software), I typed the word "Ahoy" in the center of the bubble image.   Text font used is from the free Cricut Craft Room Basic Images.  I did a solid fill of the text using the black color from Buccaneer Imagine Cricut cartridge.   I sent my Cricut mat back thru the Imagine using the "print only" feature.
  • Accents added:  black velvet ribbon from Michaels in center of card.  Four half gems (blue) also from Michaels.
Inside of card.

To create the inside of my card:

  • Mat 1 (big red polka dots) = 5.25" x 4".  Paper colors from Buccaneer Imagine Cricut cartridge. Edges of mat inked using Tim Holtz Tea Dye Distress Ink.
  • Mat 2 (beige) - 4.75" x 3.5".  Edges of mat inked using Tim Holtz Tea Dye Distress Ink.

  1. I love your take on this challenge, the embossing adds extra dimension without making it hard to send. I also love that you always share the details on how you make your cards, so that if I see something I can't live without I know where to look for it.
